What Are ADSL2 And ADSL2+?

ADSL2 and ADSL2+ are improvements to ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology that allow even higher download speeds. ADSL2 (technically referred to as ITU G.993.3 standard by the International Telecommunication Union) doubles the number of bits coming down through the connection. The information is still passed through the copper wires of the existing telephone systems. Using ADSL2+, we can offer business broadband connections with speeds up 24 Mbps – very swift indeed.

ADSL services are asymmetric, so data upload speeds are not as high. For most home and business broadband users, that’s fine, because far more information will be downloaded than sent back up. 1 Mbps is about typical for an ADSL2 download speed, although all ADSL2 and ADSL2 + speeds are dependent on location. Therein lies the catch with ADSL2 and ADSL2+ business broadband solutions – the location of your premises.

These fast internet services are available in most cities and urban areas in the UK, but the speeds generated using them are dependent on the distance between you and the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) used by your connection. Usually that means the local exchange for the telephone systems. If you are more than 2km away, the speed will probably drop a little.

That means ADSL2 and ADSL2 are great news for business broadband users in many parts of the UK, but by no means everywhere.  If you are wondering if investing in an ADSL2+ router is a good idea for your company, get in touch and we’ll help you estimate the kind of speed gains you can expect.
