What is QoS?What is QoS?

QoS in a nutshell...

In short Quality of Service (QoS) offers businesses the ability to guarantee the time taken for an IP packet to be sent from its source to its final destination. As a result QoS can be used to prioritise data traffic, offering faster movement of data for applications that require a low latency rate, such as VoIP telephony, to make for the best possible performance from that given application.

This method of selective data/traffic transfer is governed by various underlying technologies, which include: Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Ethernet and 802.1 networks, SONET, and IP-routed networks.

Specifically, QoS is able to provide a better overall network service through:

  • Supporting dedicated bandwidth
  • Improving loss characteristics
  • Avoidance and management of network congestion
  • Network traffic shaping
  • Setting network wide traffic priorities
