What is Local Loop Unbundling (LLU)?

Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) enables third party network operators to install their equipment on to local BT telephone exchanges, so that they may provide service for their own use, bypassing the BT network.

So, it is only the copper pair from the local telephone exchange to the LLU user's site that is used by the third party network operator.

Why choose LLU?

There are various reasons for opting to use LLU...

  • Higher Speeds - BT's products, generally only offer top broadband speeds of 8Mbps, with LLU we can generate speeds of up to 20Mbps. LLU is particularly useful to companies who operate in particularly busy areas where high volumes of traffic may have built up within the local BT exchange.
  • Cheaper - LLU is also used by many providers for cost savings. Instead of having to pay BT for it's IPStream products and access to the BT Central backhaul services, LLU operators can utilise their existing network and points of presence (POPs). Of course, the LLU operators still have to pay BT to house equipment in the BT telephone exchange. ISPs such as Pipex and Orange use LLU purely for cost saving purposes.
  • One Point of Contact - Our customers benefit from a single supplier, in 5G which means you have just one point of contact for you business telecom requirements, whatever they are.
  • Differentiation - Some opt to use LLU, simply to create healthy competition between ISPs, with the fight for business driving providers to improve services and offer more competitive pricing, leading to better deals for the user.
