When considering communications within a business, we believe that it is important to have a firm understanding of the types of calls that are being made.

Below, we have provided a quick guide that will tell you all you need to know about the types of calls that you are making: 

Landline

Landline calls are simply calls that are connected through the basic telephone lines, diverted from a local exchange to the call recipient's site. The line will have a geographic telephone number which dictates the area in which the call recipient is located.

Mobile

Mobile calls from a landline number are a common occurance within business, especially with many companies having representatives on the road. While calls to mobile phone numbers are generally more expensive than landline calls, rates are falling at a considerable rate.

Fixed Fee (Calls)

Some calls have pre-arranged fixed fees that are charged whatever the length of the call. Many of these will be found when calling Premium Rate Services where the recipient service provider wishes to make revenue using this pre-set method.

Local

Local call charges occur when you make calls to geographic numbers that are located within the same area as your own line, or an adjacent area. Local calls are generally the cheapest call type.

National

National calls are charged at a standard rate, throughout the UK. National call charges will occur when you call a number that is within the UK but is outside your local or adjacent area. These are more expensive than local area rates, with rates increasing by a few pence for national calls.

Premium Rate Service (“PRS”) / 09 Numbers

As the name implies, call charges to Premium Rate numbers are generally quite expensive to call, certainly more expensive than most other call types. Calls to these Premium Rate numbers are always charged at the same rate regardless of your location. Companies will use these Premium Rate Numbers as an income stream, offering specialist services in return, with much of the revenue staying with the service provider.

"08" Numbers

Many businesses choose to provide non-geographic numbers for customers to call, i.e. 0845, 0870 etc. With many of the locations masked by an '08' number, companies are able to reach a wider client market. Unlike normal local or national geographic numbers, '08' numbers charge the same call rate, wherever you are in the country.

Not all '08' numbers charge the same though, different '08' numbers hold different call rates so be aware when calling.

Freephone / 0800 Numbers

Some organisations will use freephone or 0800 numbers, in order to bring in a higher call volume. These numbers are always free to call from all landline numbers but in the majority of cases if called from a mobile phone, a charge will be incurred for the call.
